Not new to Michael Ruhlman (read Walk on Water years ago), but relatively new to the newsletter. I love waking up, making my coffee, and blissfully reading the newsletter. I talk about it with friends and family. The mix of travel, entertainment, people, and food is wonderful. It’s a perfect way to kick off the weekend. Thank you!
Two comments: First, after reading your last newsletter, I placed a request for my public library to purchase Fly Girl, and they did! I'm first on the list of holds. (In the meantime, I read Kitchen Yarns and loved it.) Your perception of Bennett's review, which can be read now at nytimes.com. matches mine. Second, you are the only other person I know who makes tomato sauce in cast iron. People are taken aback when I tell them it's possible. Thanks for providing photographic evidence!
I love Ruhlmans’s Twenty. Purchased it the day it was available for sale. I have so many sticky notes throughout the book along with notes and ideas in their pages. I plan to pass it along to my daughter at some point. Sad it will no longer be available. Thanks for writing it along with all of your other books that I love!
Well, to be honest, Michael, the last thing I need is another cookbook. But I could not resist purchasing yours, so thanks for the heads up. And so glad to see that you FINALLY included the recipe for the moussaka you wrote about recently. I had thought, "where the heck is the recipe?" So it is now downloaded into my recipe app Paprika. So thank you for that too. Enjoyed my morning coffee along with Last Call. Another thank you...And so appreciated the F 'em. Sometimes that is just what is needed to put negativity in its proper place. Happy weekend to you and Ann.
Hello, I have been enjoying your newsletter, and have been a fan of Ann Hood's writing for several years, so finally put the two together. I read your comments about the NYT review and just read it tho I have not read her book yet but plan to. I think the review is unfair, as they are 2 totally different books, and the reviewer criticizes Ms Hood for not writing the book that she wanted to read. I wish she had reviewed the book by itself.
I look forward to reading the book and continuing to enjoy your newsletter.
And clearly I will have to buy a copy of Twenty, after reading all the comment below.
Ruhlman's Twenty is one of the finest cookbooks I've ever owned. I cooked out of mine so much the spine is crumbling and the front cover is barely holding on. Time to buy a new one...or several! And I've lost track of how many times I've recommended it to friends and family.
Thanks for the book recommendations: enjoying 'Knives At Dawn' by Friedman as well as 'Chefs, Drugs, Rock n Roll'. just finished Fly Girl: '47F', Dublin March 17, Lisbon, and Cairo were great stories, easy to understand the dream, it was a great time to fly international.
And thanks for 'Making of a Chef', such a great cook's book.
I used to have your ratio app on an old cell phone. Used that app religiously and learned a lot from it. Going to dig around and see if I have a copy of Twenty. Swear I bought it long ago
Ha. Not the only one that just bought your book. Late to the cooking game and trying to jump in. Just returned from a trip to Provence with our grown kids and their fabulous new spouses. The kids were all over the cooking scene. Outdoor pizza oven pizzas, amazing and fun! Provençal Chicken with all delicious veggies, Pasta Bolognese! Wine/Cheese and charcuterie platters. Also, familiar with many of your cookbooks and love your novels and novellas too.
Thanks for the heads up about “20”, i just ordered it! With regards to the review, i must say im not surprised an ideologue expressed contempt at the thought of a working person finding pleasure in aspects of their service job. This is the eternal friction: a working clsss too busy cutting up, getting drunk, having sex, shooting deer, or playing soccer to viva la revolution with the gusto demanded by the Not-so-working-class. Fuck em.

I’ve just downloaded Ann’s book and cannot wait to read. That NYT review seemed to have an agenda no matter what - gleefully nasty. Definitely eff ‘em and move on.
We loved Slow Horses- and it’s a great theme tune sung by Mick Jagger (he’s a fan of the books apparently).

Ruhlman's Twenty Rocked my World. It's a Must Have Cookbook. Sometimes the world is sort of RIDICULOUS. (to put it mildly.)

I’m making the cake recipe from *20* this weekend for my partner’s birthday. The buttercream is joyous.

I love "20". Can't tell you how many copies I've given to friends and family. I make the Carolina BBQ sauce all of the time. Thanks.
