Cooking for groups, pork pozole, olive oil cake (with recipes), NYC's Little Cleveland, a fabulous but now dismissed cocktail, book and movie recommendations, and links we've loved!
I I recognize the oregano I do because I used it in my chili I made the other night. My favorite bean which I grew in Oregon in the 80’s when I had a huge organic garden is the cranberry bean. I have since ordered it from Rancho Gordo. The taste is so rich and creamy. However, I think most everything I grow in my garden tastes so much better than anything I can buy in the store. Rancho Gordo is a treasure.
Hang in there, Browns's fans! Humiliation is the factory where humility is made. And none but the humble can REALLY appreciate the beauty of a Super Bowl ring. As a Phillies fan, (10,000 losses and counting) I know what I'm talking about. What is it about Philly teams and the number 8? Phillies 1980 & 2008. Sixers 1983, Eagles 2018.
It seems to me from reading and LOVING this newsletter that you and Ann have been blessed with extraordinary constitutions and digestive systems. I (and I think I speak for many people) would love nothing more than to eat a bowl of cheesy pasta washed down with red wine at a dinner party. And the fact that you can drink so many incredible cocktails and still sleep even a wink, well, I’m in (jealous) awe. Maybe just consider these allergen-friendly meals an offering to the culinary gods who blessed you so profoundly!!!
Whenever someone mentions a Stinger I think of Washington Redskins epic quarterback, Sonny Jurgenson, who was a pal of my Dad's. A notorious partier, Sonny would often carouse until the wee hours the night before game days. Someone asked him how he always performed so well....what he considered his Breakfast of Champions....he smirked and responded "A bowl of Wheaties and a Stinger." A highly underrated cocktail!
Made your posole maybe half a dozen times - fantastic - just rewatched your las Vegas trip with Tony - you guys together always make me smile - thank you for your writing , Gordon

As usual, an inspiring read. You really know how to live! Keep it up!

If only Jim Brown had waited a few years for his Hollywood career. BTW, 32 and 23 make a GOAT palindrome.
Thanks for resisting temptation by avoiding politics in this week’s newsletter. I needed an island of repose…
This newsletter will remain a politics free zone!
As a Cleveland (Shaker Heights HS ‘76) native, who lives in the Berkshires , I love to read your Cleveland references. Go Brownies!
Based upon your recommendation for Rancho Gordo, I purchased several varieties. Best Beans Ever indeed.

Thanks for the recommendation for the Corona beans! My favorite from Rancho Gordo is their Scarlet Runner beans. A meaty delight!
