As I noted in last week’s newsletter, a week ago Ann and I traveled to the Hebrides, the Scottish archipelago, a journey we stretched out to 48 hours. And what a journey it was: NYC to London, London train to Inverness, a train to Kyle of Lochalsh, a taxi to the Isle of Skye with all kinds of fun in between—a pint and a meal in London, an overnight train in a double bed sleeper car, new single malts, stunning vistas.
What follows are my travel notes and our full itinerary (PDFs and a Google map at the end).
There are almost too many highlights to mention. The extraordinary natural beauty of these islands, the luxury of our room at The Three Chimneys & Over-by, the distillery on the tiny island of Raasay (pop. 190). The most awesome, in the true sense of the word, vistas on the ScotRail train from Mallaig to Glasgow.
